Dee-1 honed his lyrical skills while balancing two careers, teaching middle school children by day and performing at rap shows at night. The New Orleans native's love for hip-hop was born while attending Louisiana State University during a year filled with grief and heartbreak. Upon graduating from LSU, Dee-1 decided to teach at a middle school in Baton Rouge as a means of paying off his student loans and helping the children of the community. As a teacher, he wanted to be viewed as a role model for students, so he initially sought to keep his identity as a rap artist a secret. This secret did not last long. Dee-1 lives by his “Mission Vision” credo, which he describes as "keeping Christ in your life while using your special talents to create a better existence for yourself and your loved ones." Mission Vision is best summed up in his 3’s Up mantra:Be Real, Be Righteous, Be Relevant. In 2016, Dee-1 garnered national attention for his stand-alone track “Sallie Mae Back,” a celebratory track focused on financial responsibility. The song captured the attention of thousands of current & past college students as well as the financial loan company Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae took Dee-1 on a 26 school ‘Knowledge For College Tour’ giving away $95,000 for college, and inspiring more than 3,000 high school students. Now Dee-1 is primed to release his first full length album on November 10th, 2017.
